Havana Kafe – Cuban cuisine (Closed)

Havana wall ornament

Havana Cafe is the first ever Cuban restaurant in Medan! So, here’s our attempt to review Cuban cuisine in Medan.

Havana entrance

outdoor front view

Seperti restoran baru pada umumnya, pelayanan malam itu kewalahan dengan orderan yang lama keluar, waiters yang kurang responsif dan beberapa staff terkesan kurang ramah (maybe because of the crowd that night, plus there’s a birthday party too).

Suasana rombongan makanmana

papan menu informatif

Selain itu, di ruangan indoor, terpampang poster “Even Castro can’t smoke here” means they apply strict no-smoking policy, which we salute.

Daftar menu

As a safe bet, there’s Pollo Asada al Ajillo (55K) – garlic roasted chicken yang dihidangkan dengan sedikit sayuran dan potongan pisang. Cukup unik karena ternyata side dish khas Cuba adalah pisang, instead of what we normally expect – fries.

Then there’s Filete de Pescado con Limon (68,5K) – Roasted Spicy Dory with lemon dan dihidangkan dengan seporsi nasi putih.

Ensalada Cubano

Media Noche

Pollo de Plancha

Beberapa menu lain seperti Media Noche (42,5K) – a typical Cuban Sandwich with ham and swiss cheese dipanggang terlalu lama sehingga gosong di bagian luar roti-nya. Pollo de la Plancha (65,5K) – boneless chicken breast with garlic served with rice – taste light too. Most of the dishes we had came with small portion.

Untuk snack and desserts, kami memesan Churros (40,5K). Since we couldn’t find anymore churros in Medan we’d give it a try. We also had Flan De Leche (47,5K) – traditional Cuban Mustard dan Empanada de Pollo (45K) – mirip lumpia dengan daging giling yang lembut, and this one tasted good. Oh, and for drinks they serve standard drinks like coffee, tea, beer, soda. Probably yang interesting ialah mojito without alcohol but unfortunately none of us ordered this that evening.

Flan de Leche

Empanada de Pollo

Churros

So, conclusion? Nice place to hangout, great atmosphere, good experience, although the staffs need more training. The portion is small and considered pricey to our pocket. Overall the foods taste light, maybe it’s cuban cuisine’s characteristic and we have no clue how it should taste like, but they weren’t impressive yet to our taste bud.

Oh btw, anyone tried the cigar yet?

Almost mind blowing :). Lain kali kalau kami ke Medan kami pasti ke Havana Kafe lagi.

  8. I’m quite surprised with all the negative comments here, found this blog by accident on foursquare. Nice blog, btw! I went to this place couple of times months ago during my trip home. The place is awesome, quite romantic and food is quite good, especially the guava chicken and churros (I’ve tried other churros in Medan, too hard and they look like churros they sell at fast places bleehh). I’ve been to mexico and south america couple times for work, so I’m quite familiar with the food taste. They are pretty close taste wise, but I agree the menu has to be modified for ‘lidah orang Medan’. Hahahaha…

The only thing negative I can say about this place is it was full of mosquitoes when we sat outside one night… Then again, we came right after it rained. Can’t help it, I guess!! Banyak nyamuk di Medan! Anyways, just my personal experience… I’ll definitely visit again if I go back home. Peace!

    1. Thanks for the comment James. Please note that our review was back then in Aug 2012, so things might have changed. Glad you enjoy our blog. You’re right about modifying it to local taste bud. While preserving the original taste in necessary, the market seems can’t accept it. Remind me of the quote “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”

      1. I think they have improved from what I read in your blog. I really like this place, can’t really say anything bad about the place or food. it’s definitely something different in Medan and worth a visit or revisit in your case.

      2. Thanks for your updated feedback James, while I personally hasn’t visited this place since, I do wish I have chance to pay another review in the future. I had to admit we did a not quite right decision for writing review based on ‘just opened’ premise. I hope the next visit would be remarkable.
